The following are my Top 20 (40 Soon) videos from the 80's in no particular order, and it's not easy to choose. With Lyrics.
Dame Olivia Newton-John AC DBE
26 September 1948 – 8 August 2022.
What a brilliant band, and they will always be my personal favourite. Poison Arrow was released by New Wave band ABC in 1982 and included on their totally fantastic debut album Lexican of Love. in 1982.
Released in 1982 on The Lexican of Love Album "Poison Arrow" reached No.6 in the UK charts, No.4 in Australia and No.25 in the US. Poison Arrow was a big hit for ABC and was released in a number of record formats as well as extended versions of the song. Also look out for an alternative Lounge Music version of the song entitled "Theme from Mantrap". The 'B' side featured "Tears Are Not Enough" which reached the Top 20 in the UK in 1981. Also the best selling single the The Look of Love (watch the video!) which actually comes in four parts. Part 1 is the standard Album version, Part 2 is an Instrumental version, Part 3 is a vocal remix and Part 4 is another Instrumental. You will also find a variety of Club Remix versions.
If you fancy an alternative version, a Jazzed up version then I recommend you here this. Theme From Mantrap
If I were to say to you, "can you keep a secret?"
Would you know just what to do or where to keep it?
Then I say, "I love you", foul the situation
Hey girl, I thought we were the right combination
Who broke my heart, you did, you did
Bow to the target, blame Cupid, Cupid
You think you're smart, stupid, stupid
Shoot that poison arrow to my heart
Shoot that poison arrow
Shoot that poison arrow to my heart
Shoot that poison arrow
No rhythm in cymbals, no tempo in drums
Love on arrival, she comes when she comes
Right on the target but wide of the mark
What I thought was fire was only the spark
The sweetest melody
Is an unheard refrain
So lower your sights, yeah
But raise your aim, raise your aim
Who broke my heart, you did, you did
Bow to the target, blame Cupid, Cupid
You think you're smart, stupid, stupid
Shoot that poison arrow to my heart
Shoot that poison arrow
Shoot that poison arrow to my heart
Shoot that poison arrow
I thought you loved me, but it seems you don't care
I care enough to know, I can never love you
Who broke my heart, you did, you did
Bow to the target, blame Cupid
You think you're smart, that's stupid
Right from the start when you knew we would part
Shoot that poison arrow to my heart
Shoot that poison arrow
Shoot that poison arrow to my heart, heart, heart
Shoot that poison arrow
Heart
Shoot that poison arrow
Shoot that poison arrow

Released in 1985 this song reached No.17 in the UK charts. Love is a Battlefield was a track from her album Live from Earth. Pat received a grammy award for best Female Vocal Artist a total of four times.
Pat was thirty years of age by the time she had major chart success with a career only really taking off in the early 80s. Other hits included "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", "We Belong" and "Invincible". She has continued to have a successful career right up 2020. I think this song is my personal favourite.
We are young
(Heartache to heartache)
Heartache to heartache
(We stand)
We stand
No promises
(No demands)
No demands
(Love is a battlefield)
Love is a battlefield
Whoa
We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
You're making me go
Then making me stay
Why do you hurt me so bad?
It would help me to know
Do I stand in your way
Or am I the best thing you've had?
Believe me, believe me
I can't tell you why
But I'm trapped by your love
And I'm chained to your side
We are young
Heartache to heartache
We stand
No promises
No demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
When I'm losing control
Will you turn me away
Or touch me deep inside?
And when all this gets old
Will it still feel the same
There's no way this will die
But if we get much closer
I could lose control
And if your heart surrenders
You'll need me to hold
We are young
Heartache to heartache
We stand
No promises
No demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

While still a member of Van Halen David Lee Roth released this single California Girls which was a cover version of the original Beach Boys song recorded 20 years earlier. This hit single also featured backing vocals from Carl Wilson and Christopher Cross.
This single hit No.3 in the US Charts and was a moderate hit in the UK too because of the success of the video produced by David and with the creative input of Jerry Kramer and Peter Angelus. 1985.
I like the original more than this but who, having seen this video would not appreciate the creative content of the video and the style in which David sings this song. Beach Boys and California Girls. My friends and I were big Beach Boys fans, yes, cruising in my pals car of a Saturday night on the Kings Road, Fulham.
Well, east coast girls are hip
I really dig those styles they wear
And the southern girls, with the way they talk
They knock me out when I'm down there
The midwest farmers' daughters
Really make you feel all right
And the northern girls with the way they kiss
They keep their boyfriends warm at night
I dig them girls
I wish they all could be California (woo)
I wish they all could be California (wow)
I wish they all could be California girls
The west coast has the sunshine
And the girls all get so tanned
I dig a French bikini on Hawaii island coast
By a palm tree in the sand
I been all around this great big world
And I've seen all kinds of girls
Yeah, but I couldn't wait to get back in the States
Back to the cutest girls in the world
I dig them girls
I wish they all could be California (wow)
I wish they all could be California (woo)
I wish they all could be California girls (wow)
Oh baby, girls, girls, girls
Yeah, I dig them girls (I wish they all could be California) woo
Girls (I wish they all could be California)
Yeah, I dig them girls (I wish they all could be California)
Hey, hey, hey girls (I wish they all could be California) wow
I dig them girls (I wish they all could be California)
California girls (I wish they all could be California)
Yeah, I dig them girls (I wish they all could be California)

Sticking with Rock music for my next video I have selected this Bon Jovi song Bad Medicine. I was a mere 33 years of age at the time and more a Pop Music fan than a Rock music fan then.....
But as I've aged my music tastes have changed. There are not too many Bon Jovi songs that I highly appreciate but this is one that I do. Don't get me wrong, I'll happily listen to Bon Jovi for hours but a Rock album wouldn't be my first choice for a personal music session.
"Bed of Roses", another great song from Bon Jovi was also on this album and was the most successful single from the album.
Your love is like bad medicine
Bad medicine is what I need
Oh, oh, oh, shake it up, just like bad medicine
There ain't no doctor that can cure my disease
I ain't got a fever, I got a permanent disease
It'll take more than a doctor to prescribe a remedy
I got lots of money, but it isn't what I need
Gonna take more than a shot to get this poison out of me
And I got all the symptoms, count 'em one, two, three
First you need (That's what you get for falling in love)
Then you bleed (You get a little and it's never enough)
And then you're on your knees
(That's what you get for falling in love)
Now this boy's addicted 'cause your kiss is the drug
Oh, oh, oh, your love is like bad medicine
Bad medicine is what I need
Oh, oh, oh, shake it up, just like bad medicine
There ain't no doctor that can cure my disease
Bad, bad medicine
I don't need no needle to be giving me a thrill
And I don't need no anesthesia or a nurse to bring a pill
I got a dirty down addiction that doesn't leave a track
I got a jones for your affection like a monkey on my back
There ain't no paramedic gonna save this heart attack
When you need
(That's what you get for falling in love)
Then you bleed
(You get a little and it's never enough)
And then you're on your knees
(That's what you get for falling in love)
Now this boy's addicted 'cause your kiss is the drug
Oh, oh, oh, your love is like bad medicine
Bad medicine is what I need
Oh, oh, oh, shake it up, just like bad medicine
So let's play doctor, baby, cure my disease
Bad, bad medicine
Is what I want
Bad, bad medicine
Is what I need
I need a respirator 'cause I'm running out of breath
For you're an all night generator wrapped in stockings and a dress
When you find your medicine, you take what you can get
'Cause if there's something better, baby
Well, they haven't found it yet
Oh, oh, oh, your love is like bad medicine
Bad medicine is what I need
Oh, oh, oh, shake it up, just like bad medicine
There ain't no doctor that can cure my disease
Your love, bad medicine
Bad medicine is what I need
Oh, oh, oh, shake it up, just like bad medicine
Your love's the potion that can cure my disease
Bad, bad medicine
Is what I want
Bad, bad medicine
Oh, baby, oh, baby
I gotta do, I gotta
I gotta do, I gotta
I gotta, I gotta
I gotta do it again
Wait a minute, wait a minute, hold on
I'm not done, one more time, with feel
Come on, one for that, help me up, now
Your love is like bad medicine
Bad medicine is what I need
Oh, oh, oh, shake it up, just like bad medicine
You got the potion that can cure my disease
Your love, bad medicine
Your kiss is what I need
Your love, bad medicine

Chain Reaction was written by the Bee Gees who also sang the backing vocals for this melodic 1985 R&B song sung by the beautiful and talented Diana Ross......
The song was originally released on the 1985 album "Eaten Alive". One of my most memorable songs of the 80's but maybe it wasn't Diana's song though she did it just fine for me but it would seem that the Steps version is way more popular than Diana Ross's version as it's achieved 8.5m views where as Diana has only managed 1m views. Of Course I will add a Kylie song!. Chain Reaction was released as a single in 1985 and again in 1986. Whether as a member of the Supremes or in her own right as a solo artist, Diana Ross was one of the outstanding female artist of the 70's and 80's. Chain Reaction is here because it was Diana's last appearance on the US Billboard Top 100 where it didn't do that well and because it reached the No.1 spot here in the UK.
You took a mystery and made me want it
You got a pedestal and put me on it
You made me love you out of feeling nothing
Something that you do
And I was there and not dancing with anyone
You took a little, then you took me over
You set your mark on stealing my heart away
Crying, trying, anything for you
I'm in the middle of a chain reaction
You give me all the after midnight action
I want to get you where I can let you make all that love to me
I'm on a journey for the inspiration
To anywhere and there ain't no salvation
I need you to get me nearer to you
So you can set me free
We talk about love, love, love
We talk about love
We talk about love, love, love
We talk about love
You make me tremble when your hand moves lower
You taste a little then you swallow slower
Nature has a way of yielding treasure
Pleasure made for you, oh
You gotta plan, your future is on the run
Shine a light for the whole world over
You never find your love if you hide away
Crying, dying, all you gotta do is
Get in the middle of a chain reaction
You get a medal when you're lost in action
I want to get your love all ready for the sweet sensation
Instant radiation
You let me hold you for the first explosion
We get a picture of our love in motion
My arms will cover, my lips will smother you
With no more left to say
We talk about love, love, love
We talk about love
You let me hold you for the first explosion
My arms will cover you
All you gotta do is get in the middle of a chain reaction
You get a medal when you're lost in action
Don't pass me by
I want to get your love all ready for the chain reaction ...

Her name is Rio and she certainly has a good time in this video. This video is so 80's, mainly because of the suits with those big padded shoulders and the bright colours which continue throughout the video, right down to the custard!
Some videos just should not go unseen, I hope the original film is in good condition because it's a piece of British history. One of the best videos of the 80's and made to follow on from the success of their second album. Duran Duran have to go down as one of the top bands of the 80's for their video success and their music success. They certainly weren't afraid to push the boundaries. The album "Rio" achieved Gold and Platinum status by the end of 1983. Duran Duran had 14 singles in the UK Top 10 and sold over 100 million records. Success took it's toll on the boys though as the original members only managed to hold it together until the mid 80's when exhaustion claimed it's first group member.
Moving on the floor now, babe
You're a bird of paradise
Cherry ice cream smile
I suppose it's very nice
With a step to your left and a flick to the right
You catch that mirror way out west
You know you're something special
And you look like you're the best
Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river twisting through a dusty land
And when she shines, she really shows you all she can
Oh Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande
I've seen you on the beach
And I've seen you on TV
Two, of a billion stars
It means so much to me
Like a birthday or a pretty view
But then I'm sure that you know it's just for you
Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river twisting through a dusty land
And when she shines, she really shows you all she can
Oh Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande
Hey now (woo)
Look at that did he nearly run you down
At the end of the drive the lawmen arrive
You make me feel alive, alive, alive
I'll take my chance 'cause luck is on my side
Or something, I know what you're thinking
I'll tell you something, I know what you're thinking
Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river twists across a dusty land
And when she shines, she really shows you all she can
Oh Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande
Her name is Rio, she don't need to understand
And I might find her if I'm looking like I can
Oh Rio, Rio hear them shout across the land
From mountains in the north, down to the Rio Grande

Sledghammer After his amicable split from Genesis Peter began his solo career in 1977 with the release of "Solesbury Hill". But my choice here is a great video to accompany this Top 10 hit song by Peter Gabriel called "Sledgehammer" which also matched his other Top 10 hit Games Without Frontiers in popularity in the UK Charts.
This song is from the album "So, Passion and Us" which rocketed Peter in Pop status making him a global star in 1986. The album also contained another hit song called "Don't Give Up" which was a duet with Kate Bush, a lovely song that probably saved lives! By today's standards this Video is nothing special but in 1986 it was the video that helped this song achieve it's hit song status. The video actually won a number of awards including 9 MTV awards in 1987. WikiPedia states "The lyrics are a mosaic of sexual innuendos, with references to steam trains, bumper cars, Big Dipper (roller coaster) and fruit cage as metaphors for male and female sexual organs and references to pollination, acting like a sledgehammer, fruit and bees as metaphors of sexual acts". The video was produced by Adam Whittaker of Aardman productions fame. The video uses claymation, pixilation, and stop motion animation to give life to the images which I would imagine takes a lot of planning, time and resource. One of Peter's favourite singers/song writers is Otis Redding
Hey, hey, you there
Tell me how have you been?
You could have a steam train
If you'd just lay down your tracks
You could have an aeroplane flying
If you bring your blue sky back
All you do is call me
I'll be anything you need
You could have a big dipper
Going up and down, all around the bends
You could have a bumper car, bumping
This amusement never ends
I wanna be your sledgehammer
Why don't you call my name?
Ah oh, let me be your sledgehammer
This will be my testimony
Yeah (yeah)
Show me 'round your fruit cage
'Cause I will be your honey bee
Open up your fruit cage
Where the fruit can be sweet as can be
I wanna be your sledgehammer
Why don't you call my name?
Ah, you'd better call the sledgehammer
Put your mind at rest
I'm gonna be the sledgehammer
This can be my testimony
Ah, I'm your sledgehammer
Let there be no doubt about it
I get it right, I kicked the habit (kicked the habit, kicked the habit)
Shed my skin (shed my skin)
This is the new stuff (this is the new stuff)
I go dancing in (we go dancing in)
Oh, won't you show for me? (Show for me)
I will show for you (show for you)
Please, show for me (show for me)
Huh, I will show for you
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I do mean you (show for me)
Only you, you've been coming through (show for you)
I'm gonna build that power, build, build up that power, hey (show for me)
I've been feeding the rhythm, huh
I've been feeding the rhythm (show for you)
Gonna feel that power hey, build in you (show for me)
Ah, come on, come on, help me do
Come on, come on, help me do (show for you)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you (show for me)
I've been feeding the rhythm
I've been feeding the rhythm (show for you)
It's what we're doing, doing
All day and night (show for me)
Come on, come on, help me do
Come on, come on, help me do (show for you)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you (show for me)

Following on from Peter Gabriel I've chosen a Genesis song. OK, so I'm really a Genesis fan so whatever I do I will nearly always find a way of dropping a Genesis song into my Top 20 80's videos or any music selection! I like this video because it shows them in a way that we would always like to remember them.
It's not just me that loved Genesis, they were one of the biggest bands of the 70's and 80's selling over 150 million albums. Invisible Touch was the title track to the album of the same name and released in 1986 and was immediately a Top 10 hit reaching number 1 in the UK. Invisible Touch was re released several times and included on other Albums from Genesis right up to 1991. There was also a limited edition 7" version of the song released in 1991. What amazes me about this album is the fact that the title track reached the No.1 spot on the US chart, the only song by Genesis to do so, and after the departure of Peter Gabriel who also had his own success in the same year. Further more, Phil Collins who was lead singer for Genesis had his own successful career and Collins released his most successful album, the Diamond-certified "No Jacket Required", which reached number one in U.S. in the summer of 1985. It contained the U.S. number one hits "One More Night" and "Sussudio". So, in all, Peter Gabriel, Genesis and Phil Collins were on a roll in the mid 80's, possibly by association.
Well I've been waiting, waiting here so long
But thinking nothing, nothing could go wrong, ooh now I know
She has a built in ability
To take everything she sees
And now it seems I'm falling, falling for her.
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
She reaches in, and grabs right hold of your heart
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
It takes control and slowly tears you apart.
Well I don't really know her, I only know her name
But she crawls under your skin, you're never quite the same, and now I know
She's got something you just can't trust
It's something mysterious
And now it seems I'm falling, falling for her.
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
She reaches in, and grabs right hold of your heart
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
It takes control and slowly tears you apart.
She don't like losing, to her it's still a game
And though she will mess up your life,
You'll want her just the same, and now I know
She has a built in ability
To take everything she sees
And now it seems I've fallen, fallen for her.
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
She reaches in, and grabs right hold of your heart
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
It takes control and slowly tears you apart.
She seems to have an invisible touch...

Annie Lennox playing with a few heart strings in this song, even more so if you watched the video. She was simply one of the iconic voices of the 80's, who didn't love the Eurythmics'? And doesn't the Harmonica sound as though it had a little help from Stevie Wonder, right down to the Cherub impersonating a young Stevie too.
I'm sure a few guys would like to have walked Annie Lennox down the aisle, but don't be fooled by her angelic look, there is a woman of steely determination and confidence under that make-up (Just my opinion). And don't forget to check out her delicious website AnnieLennox.com, you will stay for a while I'm sure. Next to Annie stood David A. Stewart, musician, song writer and producer. Eurythmics' formed in 1980 and split in 1990 causing a mass of disappointment among their big fan base but gave us a reunion or two to lift our spirits in later years. It wasn't until 1983 that Eurythmics made their big breakthrough to the mainstream (I can't think of another word!) commercial POP music world although they are classified like so many bands at the time as a Synthpop, Rock and New-wave band. This song was written by the pair for their album "Be Yourself Tonight" which was released in 1985. And Yes, the Harmonica was played by Stevie Wonder, who else plays it like that...And that's the reason our little Cherub got the part! Cool a! "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)" became Eurythmics' first and only number-one single in the UK.

If you were at Pine Knob in 1982 you may see yourself in this "Live At Pine Knob, 1982" version on YouTube. Abracadabra At Pine Knob This live version was played at slightly fast pace than the video production version, I prefer it.
I found this Steve Miller Band song when visiting a friends house, looking through the vast range of singles on hand I found Abracadabra which I hadn't yet heard. Wow! This is brilliant, I played it about half a dozen times. I especially loved the guitar play. The Steve Miller Band was extensibly a Rock Band but this song Abracadabra is essentially a pop song leading many SMB fans to dismiss it prefering The Joker instead. Maybe this song was written by Steve Miller in an effort to widen his audiance and it did do that. While The Joker has had 10 million views on YouTube, Abracadabra has had 11 million, possibly because 2 million viewers wanted to know why The Joker was more popular.
This song was inspired by a meeting with Diana Ross who Steve met on an American TV show called Hullabaloo. I'm guessing that Steve needed a hit and Diana said "how about a pop song!" for which Steve sort inspiration. The video features magicians in white room performing tricks. The idea for the song came from an American TV show called The Original Amatuer Hour in which amatuer artists including magicians perform. Given that the show features a wheel which was used to choose the order of the talents appearence with the words "Round and round she goes, and where she stops no one knows" we can say that Steve thought this was enough inspiration for a song. Flame throwing Magicians, women in body suits and a spinning wheel. "Abra abracadabra, I wanna reach out and grab ya, Abra abracadabra, Abracadabra".
I heat up, I can't cool down
You got me spinning
'Round and 'round
'Round and 'round and 'round it goes
Where it stops nobody knows
Every time you call my name
I heat up like a burning flame
Burning flame full of desire
Kiss me baby, let the fire get higher
Abra abracadabra
I wanna reach out and grab ya
Abra abracadabra
Abracadabra
You make me hot, you make me sigh
You make me laugh, you make me cry
Keep me burning for your love
With the touch of a velvet glove
Abra abracadabra
I wanna reach out and grab ya
Abra abracadabra
Abracadabra
I feel the magic in your caress
I feel magic when I touch your dress
Silk and satin, leather and lace
Black panties with an angel's face
I see magic in your eyes
I hear the magic in your sighs
Just when I think I'm gonna get away
I hear those words that you always say
Abra abracadabra
I wanna reach out and grab ya
Abra abracadabra
Abracadabra
Every time you call my name
I heat up like a burning flame
Burning flame full of desire
Kiss me baby, let the fire get higher
Yeah, yeah
I heat up, I can't cool down
My situation goes 'round and 'round
I heat up, I can't cool down
My situation goes 'round and 'round
I heat up, I can't cool down
My situation goes 'round and 'round
I heat up (I heat up), I can't cool down (can't cool down)
My situation goes 'round and 'round ('round and 'round)
I heat up (I heat up), I can't cool down (can't cool down)
My situation goes 'round and 'round ('round and 'round)
I heat up, I heat up (can't cool, can't cool down)
'Round and 'round

Now Google or Search engines wont like this, it might look as though I have copied and pasted this content but I'm just going to repeat the words of Kate Bush. The Song chronicles a wife's desire to test her husband's loyalty.......
To do so, she takes on the pseudonym of Babooshka and sends notes to her husband in the guise of a younger woman, something which she fears is the opposite of how her husband currently sees her. Kate Bush, awarded a CBE in 2013 released her debut single "Wuthering Heights" on the 20th of January 1978 at the age of 20, I was 23. Kate wrote the song after watching the film Wuthering Heights starring Laurence Olivier and Geraldine Fitzgerald. "Babooshka" was released in June 1980, 2 years after "Wuthering Heights". Babooshaka followed the theme for all Kate's video with heavy use of theatrics in which she acts out the characters role in the song to reinforce it's delivery and drama. From the album "Never for Ever" released September 1980 when Kate was just 22. More information here on Wikipedia and on Kate's own website KateBush.com Very much worth a visit, from the website you can watch a Video and follow Kate on Twitter.

Adam and the Ants "Stand and Deliver" was their most successful Top 40 Hit going in at No.1 on the 9th may 1981. This hit single was also a track on the 1981 album Prince Charming released in late '81.
In the Video Adam plays a Dandy Highwayman who likes his make up and is fussy about his dress style so last years styles or posh frocks aren't his thing, he much prefers your money so that he can stick to his own style.
Adam and the Ants formed in 1977 although there were a coupe of changes to the band members during their early days, mostly driven by individual ambitions.
This was not just my favourite single either as it sold over 1 million copies pushing it into the Top 10 straight after release. In 1982 the band received a Grammy Nomination but the band was also on the verge of a split. After the band split in 1982 Adam Ant (Stuart Leslie Goddard) set out on a solo career releasing another chart entry with the song "Goody Two Shoes". The band members included Paul Flanagan, Andy Warren, Mark Ryan, Terry Lee Miall, Dave Barbarossa, Marco Pirroni, Johnny Bivouac, Kevin Mooney, Leigh Gorman, Matthew Ashman, Gary Gibbs and drummer/record producer Chris Hughes at various stages in it's short life, most continuing to forge a career in the music industry in their own right.
I'm the dandy highwayman who you're too scared to mention
I spend my cash on looking flash and grabbing your attention
The devil take your stereo and your record collection (oh-oh)
The way you look you'll qualify for next year's old age pension
Stand and deliver your money or your life
Try and use a mirror no bullet or a knife
I'm the dandy highwayman so sick of easy fashion
The clumsy boots, peek-a-boo roots that people think so dashing
So what's the point of robbery when nothing is worth taking? (oh oh)
It's kind of tough to tell a scruff the big mistake he's making
Stand and deliver your money or your life
Try and use a mirror no bullet or a knife
And even though you fool your soul
Your conscience will be mine
All mine
We're the dandy highwaymen so tired of excuses
Of deep meaning philosophies where only showbiz loses
We're the dandy highwaymen and here's our invitation (oh oh)
"Throw your safety overboard and join our insect nation"
Stand and deliver your money or your life
Try and use a mirror no bullet or a knife
And even though you fool your soul
Your conscience will be mine
All mine
Qua qua da diddley qua qua da diddley
Qua qua da diddley qua qua da diddley
Qua qua da diddley qua qua da diddley
Qua qua da diddley qua qua da diddley
Stand and deliver your money or your life
Stand and deliver your money or your life
Stand and deliver your money or your life
Stand and deliver your money or your life
Stand and deliver your money or your life
Stand and deliver your money or your life
Stand and deliver your money or your life
Stand and deliver your money or your life
Stand and deliver your money or your life
Stand and deliver your money or your life

I'm in danger of duplicating content readily available of the web so I'll be brief. The Alan Parsons Project were a Rock Band formed back in 1974/75 with their first Album being "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" which was released in 1976, the album reached No.38 on the Billbords Album Chart.
The Alan Parson Project was a team of two consisting of Alan Parson's an English Producer, Songwriter, Musician and Audio Engineer and Eric Woolfson who was a Composer, Lyracist and Songwriter. Alan worked with bands such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Ambrosia. Alan Parsons started his career back in 1967 but is still active today. Alan and Eric met while working at Abbey Studios as composers and songwriters. You can find out more about Alan by visiting his website here alanparson.com. The Alan Parson Project was Alan Parsons and Scottish Songwriter and Musician Eric Woolfson who incidentally was a little younger than Billy Connolly who lived just down the road in Anderston just 0.7 of a mile away, Billy and Eric would have met in their careers but grew up under very different circumstances. As children they were just 1/2 a mile from each other yet had very very different upbringings. Eric's family were reasonably wealthy Jewish business owners. Unfortunatly Eric died in 1974 at the young age of 64 with so much more to give the music world. Eric's website descibes Eric as a "award-winning composer, lyricist and writer"

Don't Answer Me was released in 1984 and is the bands 2nd and most succesful song from the band's album Ammonia Avenue. Lead vocals were perfomed by Eric Woolfson. Inspiration for the song came from the likes of Phil Spector and the Wall of Sound technique where by top class musicians would be assembled each with their style and instrument choices which lead to a different sound with each and every song. Because The Alan parsons Project used mainly session musicians there were never any live performances or stage performances, everything was performed in the studio hence we have a Dick Tracy style animation for this particular song which took 23 days to create and cost $50,000.
… If you believe in the power of magic
I can change your mind
And if you need to belive in someone
Turn and look behind
When we were living in a dream world
Clouds got in the way
We gave it up in a moment of madness
And threw it all away
… Don't answer me, don't break the silence
Don't let me win
Don't answer me, stay on your island
Don't let me in
… Run away and hide from everyone...
Can you change the things we've said and done?
… If you belive in the power of magic
It's all a fantasy
So if you need to belive in someone
Just pretend it's me
It ain't enough that we meet as strangers
I can't set you free
So will you turn your back forever
On what you mean to me?
… Don't answer me, don't break the silence
Don't let me win
Don't answer me, stay on your island
Don't let me in
… Run away and hide from everyone...
Can you change the things we've said and done?
… Don't answer me, don't break the silence
Don't let me win
Don't answer me, stay on your island
Don't let me in
… Run away and hide from everyone...
… Don't answer me, don't break the silence
Don't let me win
Don't answer me, stay on your island
Don't let me in
… Can you change the things we've said and done?
… Don't answer me, don't break the silence
Don't let me win
Don't answer me, stay on your island
Don't let me in...

Tear For Fears were a "New Wave" (post Punk) rock band formed in 1981 consisting of Roland Orbazel and Curt Smith. Both Curt and Roland contributed vocally and co wrote their songs although Orbazel played a greater part in the song writing. Both are accomplished musicians.
Roland writes songs, plays Guitar, Timpani (Kettle drum) and Keyboard. Curt also Sings plays Bass Guitar and Keyboards. So these two guys along with keyboard player and composer Ian Stanley and drummer Manny Elias, were Tears For Fears for a period of 10 years from 1981 through to 1991. Ian and Manny were not considered full members of the band until 1983 when they released The Hurting. They met as Teenagers and were only 20 years of age when they formed T.F.F. Both are highly acclaimed British Musicians and Song writers. I kind of like the this video which was created to promote this song which only reached No.12 in the UK. The song is from the 1984 album Songs from the Big Chair. BUY! Songs From The Big Chair (Remastered With Bonus Tracks)
I wanted to be with you alone
And talk about the weather
But traditions I can trace against the child in your face
Won't escape my attention
You keep your distance via the system of touch
And gentle persuasion
I'm lost in admiration, could I need you this much?
Oh, you're wasting my time
You're just, just, just wasting time
Something happens and I'm head over heels
I never find out until I'm head over heels
Something happens and I'm head over heels
Ah, don't take my heart, don't break my heart
Don't, don't, don't throw it away
Throw it away, throw it away
I made a fire, and watching it burn
Thought of your future
With one foot in the past, now just how long will it last?
Now, now, now, have you no ambitions?
My mother and my brothers used to breathing clean air
And dreaming I'm a doctor
It's hard to be a man when there's a gun in your hand
Oh, I feel so
Something happens and I'm head over heels
I never find out until I'm head over heels
Something happens and I'm head over heels
Ah, don't take my heart, don't break my heart
Don't, don't, don't throw it away
And this is my four leaf clover
I'm on the line, one open mind
This is my four leaf clover
In my mind's eye
One little boy, one little man
Funny how time flies

The sort of song any girl might love to hear while getting closer to someone special And how many people have made love while listening to a Simply Red song. You would have to be deaf to ignore this 1988 love Ballard sung by Mick Hucknall. This song was originally sung by Barry White back in 1978.
While a great song sung by two very popular artists both songs come across quite differently in my view. Barry's version was a Disco dance floor hit, as was Mick Hucknalls but I would imagine many girls would prefer the Simply Red version during a romantic evening at home. I prefer the smooth vocals of Mick over the raspy tones of Barry White personally. Simply Red's version reached No.13 in '88 and was a moderate hit in the US at No.57 although it should have most definitely done better but I would imagine there was some affection for the Barry White version in the US, plus I would imagine more women purchased this single or the Album than men! I wasn't a big Simply Red fan but I know many women who were, and that's why it's here. For all the cuddles I received during Simply Red concerts.

Don't be afraid to touch me, babe
Girl, let's be real
There's nothing wrong
With the way we're carrying on
So enjoy and live
Because
It's only love doing it's thing, baby
It's only love that you're feeling, girl, you're felling
It's only love doing it's thing, baby
It's only love that you're giving, you're giving
I wanna stay with you night and day
Until the end of time
It's okay when you lay
Lay your body next to mine
Because
It's only love doing it's thing, baby
It's only love that you're feeling, girl, you're felling
It's only love doing it's thing, baby
It's only love that you're giving, you're giving
Instrumental piece
I wanna stay with you night and day
Until the end of time
It's okay when you lay
Lay your body next to mine
Because
It's only love doing it's thing, baby
It's only love that you're feeling, girl, you're felling
It's only love doing it's thing, baby
It's only love that you're giving, yeah
It's only love doing it's thing, baby
It's only love that you're feeling
It's only love doing it's thing, baby
It's only love that you're giving
It's only love doing it's thing, baby
It's only love that you're feeling
It's only love doing it's thing, baby
It's only love that you're giving
It's only love doing it's thing, baby
It's only love that you're feeling

West End Girls. Not really a subject you would expect the Pet Shop Boys to write a song to or for. Though if you have ever been to the West End then you will know the girls come in many different guises, if you don't understand that then look it up! "an external form, appearance, or manner of presentation, typically concealing the true nature of something".
I will have to add that a Pal of mine once tried to chat to a young lady as she walked along the street with a curious wiggle, we tried to tell him, SHE is not a girl! Then there are the Girls! you know the Girls. And the Guys that are Girls as well as Girls that are Guys. And as Earth Wind and Fire sung in the '79 hit Boogie Wonderland "Midnight creeps so slowly into hearts of men who need more than they get". So the song is about the West End Clubbing scene where Chris and Neil spent many happy evenings. The Guardian: Neil Tennant on West End Girls: 'It's about sex and escape. It's paranoid'.
His words. Pet Shop Boys debut single was voted greatest British No.1 of all time. The Guardian 06/2020. And I added this song here back in 2013. So I was right.
Sometimes you're better off dead
There's a gun in your hand it's pointing at your head
You think you're mad, too unstable
Kicking in chairs and knocking down tables
In a restaurant in a West End town
Call the police, there's a mad man around
Running down underground
To a dive bar in a West End town
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
West End girls
Too many shadows, whispering voices
Faces on posters, too many choices
If, when, why, what? How much have you got?
Have you got it, do you get it, if so, how often?
Which do you choose
A hard or soft option?
(How much do you need?)
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
West End girls
West End girls
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
Ooh, West End town, a dead end world
East End boys, West End girls
West End girls
You got a heart of glass or a heart of stone
Just you wait 'til I get you home
We've got no future
We've got no past
Here today, built to last
In every city, in every nation
From Lake Geneva to the Finland station
How far have you been?
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
A West End town, a dead end world
East End boys, West End girls
West End girls
West End girls
West End girls
How far have you been?
Girls

Prince Rogers Nelson more commonly known as Prince was a Singer-Songwriter, Muscian and Producer active from 1975 to 2016 known most notably for his songs produced through the 1980's with the song Purple Rain produced in 1984 as his best known hit single......
Purple Rain reached No.2 in the UK and the US and was only kept from the top spot by George Michael and Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" but reached No.1 in other European countries.....
The song was again pushed into the top 20 in 2016 on news of the stars death and peaked at No.1 a week after his death from an overdose. It's ranked in the Top 20 list of songs by Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs. Originally written as a Country Song Purple Rain as a song was given to Stevie Nicks with a request to write some lyrics but she was overwhelmed with the theme of the song and respecfully declined. The style of the song was changed through influences from other artists who Prince had approached with the song. Wikipedia has all the information. I will just say that the song was full of emotion and deep meaning.
Here is a quote from Wikipedia:
"The song ranked number 18 on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Q magazine placed it at number 40 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks, and Pitchfork named it the best song of the 1980s. Paste and American Songwriter both ranked it as Prince's greatest song. The song is also included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll."
[First Verse]
I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
I only wanted one time to see you laughing
[Pre-Chorus]
I only wanted to see you
Laughing in the purple rain
[Chorus]
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
I only want to see you
Bathing in the purple rain
[Second Verse]
I never wanted to be your weekend lover
I only wanted to be some kind of friend, hey
Baby, I could never steal you from another
[Pre-Chorus]
It's such a shame our friendship had to end
[Chorus]
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
I only want to see you
Underneath the purple rain
[Verse 3]
Honey, I know, I know
I know times are changing
It's time we all reach out
For something new, that means you, too
You say you want a leader
But you can't seem to make up your mind
[Pre-Chorus]
I think you better close it
And let me guide you to the purple rain

It's a great song but it should send shivers up your spine, it sounds like a man obesessed, every breath you take, every move you make, every step you take I'll be watching you. Sounds like a case of distrust and agony, every step you take takes you away from me but I'll be watching you. Only see your face, lonely, crying, baby baby please.....
"I think the song is very, very sinister and ugly and people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle little love song, when it's quite the opposite"It was actually written while Steve was on Holiday with his new love who was infact a neighbour and a friend of his wife's. You can find out more on the story of this song on the SmoothRadio website here.
Every breath you take
And every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I'll be watching you
Every single day
And every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
I'll be watching you
Oh, can't you see
You belong to me?
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take?
Every move you make
And every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I'll be watching you
Since you've gone, I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
I look around, but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold, and I long for your embrace
I keep crying, baby, baby please
Oh, can't you see
You belong to me?
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take?
Every move you make
And every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I'll be watching you
Every move you make
Every step you take
I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you
(Every breath you take)
(Every move you make)
(Every bond you break)
(Every step you take) I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you
whoo, hoo
(Every game you play)
(Every night you stay) I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you
(Every single day)
(Every word you say)
(Every game you play)
(Every night you stay) I'll be watching you

Like many Bands of the time Art of Noise were a Synth-pop band formed in the early 80's. An unusual group consisting of an Engineer, a Programmer, a Journalist and at least a Keyboardist. Both Gary Lagan and Trevor Horn were music producers, Gary Langan would go on to produce Beauty Stab by ABC in 1983, worth listening to with it's more guitar orientated sound.....
Gary started his career back in 1975 at the age of 18. Johnathan Jeczalik started his musical path by promoting a group called Landscape (Einstein a Go-Go) then worked as a Roadie before meeting The Buggles and Trevor Horn. Eventually he would work with Gary on hits for Dollar and ABC. Trevor Horn was the oldest of the group and had greater experince working as a producer as well as being a self taught Bass Guitarist who could actually read Music. Trevor was a member of The Buggles (Video Killed The Radio Star) with Geoff Downs. It seems that Art of Noise came about because of a Keyboard that could be used to create short sound recordings called the Fairlight CMI which was also used by Peter Gabriel. Art of Noise of course had amongst the group an Engineer and a programmer, just what you need with an instrument such as Fairlight with a Computer processor. Think of Kate Bush, JeanMichael Jarre, Yello, and even Stevie Wonder as well as Tony Mansfield of NewMusik another Synth Pop band. Tony was skilled with the Fairlight CMI and had involvment with many bands including Art of Noise, as I have said many other artists were experimenting and producing using the Fairlight, Kate Bush did for all of her career. Art of Noise debut album was Battle with the Art of Noise, I'm guessing that producing your first album with a new team and a new Hi Tech instrument took time and hard work, something of a battle, not just the battle amongst the members of the Band. You'll have noticed that the band were mostly faceless as in this video featuring Max Headroom but I'm pretty sure they would have got themselves in amongst the mayhem that was Dragnet. One of the Bands US Hits was Beatbox for Body Poppers with a nice touch of Bass Guitar that also made good use of both left and right speakers. These guys must have really enjoyed themselves, playing and getting paid, though the break up of the band came about because of their differences. I have seen this diss harmony among many bands, often because artists have their or develop their own ideas and preferences in composition and style. Then they all have their own ideas of where music is going with an era of Digitalisation and moving away from Analogue instruments, you will notice that Art of Noise liked to mix a little Analogue with their Digital. You can download Fairlight CMI to use with your own computer and digital Keyboard. If you want to kmow anything about the Fairlight then click this link About The Fairlight CMS

The first time I heard Cher she was Cher Bono wife of Sonny Bono and they were "Sonny and Cher" and I remember hearing the 1965 hit "I Got You Babe". I wasn't a big fan at the age of 10 but I did have to listen to my brothers music a lot along with a lot of Elvis, Buddy Holly and a whole lot of Tamla.
Now for this video, you may remember Chers' tights or stockings, a US Battleship and those very happy sailors. That was 1989 Cher was aged 43. This song is titled "If I could Turn Back Time". This song just makes it in to my Top 20 80's songs since it was released in June 1989. The song was from her amazingly successful 1989 album Heart of Stone, and if you managed to buy a copy shortly after it's release then well done you. The Video is VERY memorable, well, it is for me since I always had a soft spot for that soulful voice of hers and her dress style in 1989 or at any time come to that. By the way, Believe released in 1998 was probably her most popular song ever and with YouTube views of 230 million. Thanks Cher!
