No.1's Jan to Dec 1980
1. Michael Jackson and "I Want to Rock with You" January, 1980.
I've chosen a Video remix by Heavenly Creatures on YouTube called The Reflex Version for this song, it's 7 minutes long and you can play it here using this LINK "I Want To Rock With You".
Written by Rod Temperton (Always and For Ever, The Groove Line, Thriller, Off THe Wall, and Rock with You) who was a British Musician and Songwriter having written songs for the Temptations as well as many other including Michael. This song was actually released in November 1979. Rod also wrote another favourite of mine called Boogie Nights by Heatwave Rock With You was the 4th biggest Single of the 1980's.
2. Queen and "A Crazy Little Thing Called Love"
Actually released in October 1979 this song written by Freddie Mercury was released on the 1980 Album The Game and appears on the The Greatest Hits Album. It was the bands final single release of the 1970's. Something unique about this song is the fact that this was the first song and time Freddie had played Guitar on stage with the band. Karl Coryat talks about this song in his book called The Bass Player and descibes it as Rockability. Most popular songs by Queen based on YouTube views is Bohemian Rhapsody (1.6B Views), Another One Bites The Dust(556M), Killer Queen(251M) and Fat Bottomed Girls (110M).
3. "Another Brick in The Wall" by Pink Floyd
Released in November 1979 as part of Pink Floyds rock opera The Wall and written by Roger Waters. Not just a Rock song but also a Pop Song as elements of Disco were added to the song. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and I can concur with the theme of this song, Just Another brick in The wall. The Genre of this song is Rock, Hard ROck, Dance-Rock and Disco. The Single Version is 3.11 minutes long while the Album version is 5.43 minutes so the Album version is the one you want to listen too. Anyone growing lucky enough to be at school in the 70's can identify withe this song. Todays Teachers are far more chilled as many of the teachers in my era were of course ex Forces. Ranked number 384 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". It charted in the Top 10 in the majority of Countries through 1980.
4. "Call Me" by Blondie
With lead singer Debbie Harry. Call Me was released in January 1980 as the Theme song to American Gigolo. Debie Harry wrote the lyrics to Call Me while the song was composed by an Italian Song writer Girgio Moroder, the Father of Disco. Girgio Moroder was a major Composer and spearheaded much of the Disco Music style and the use of Electronic synthesizer music of the 70's and 80's and writing songs for nearly every band or singer through the 70's and 80's including Kylie Minogue and David Bowie, plus many more. Famous also for writting the official theme song of the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Call Me is ranked as number 4 in the list of greatest Blondie Songs and on Rolling Stones list of greatest 500 songs of all time.
5. "Coming Up" by Paul McCartney
Does this song sound a little different to you, something a little quicker than the usual McCartney sound? Well, it should do. A tape machine was used to add a synthesised sound effect by speeding up the whole song so a 4 minute song was probably more of a 5 minute song. And given that majority of Beetles songs were 2 to 2.5 minutes long that's a long song. The single was a hit for Paul and the band peeking at No.2 in the charts in April 1980. It was released a song on the Bands or PM's Album McCartney II released in the summer of 79. This song is referred to as New Wave Synth because of the use of electronics to influence the sound.
6. "Funkytown" by American Disco group Lipps Inc.
The original version is 4 minutes long or the 12" version is 7.50 minutes long. Released in 1980 and taken from their 2nd Album Mouth to Mouth released in Nov. 1979. The song reached No.1 in 28 different countries, a disco hit indeed. Arguably launched toward the end of the Disco era it was a smash hit. Only just in time because 1978/9 disco craze peaked in 1978/9 as we moved to toward more electronics and new wave music, as well as Punk of course. The lead singer on the album was Cynthia Johnson who went on to release a some a few song of her own but worked with Lipps Inc. until 1985. Cynthia then provided backing vocals for many other bands and artists. She is a Saxophonist and a Song Writer. The Bands songs were written by Steven Greenberg who has his own Record Label 'October Records'.
7. "XANADU" by Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra. Sung by Olivia Newton-John.
Written as the title song for the soundtrack to the film by the same name. The song reached No. 1 in the UK and a few other countries including Australia, Ireland and West Germany. Olivia sung lead vocals, Geff Lynne played Keybord, Guitars and sung backing vocals. This was one of Jeff Lynnes favourite songs. RIP Olivia Newton-John Sep. 1948 to Aug. 2022.
